Create Learning Activities with Microsoft

Learning Activities can turn learning content into interactive: 

  • Flashcards,
  • Fill in the Blanks, and
  • Matching activities.

Faculty can use theses activities to create additional practice, student tutors can create activities to reinforce concepts during or after tutoring, and students can create their own study activities from notes and other learning materials.

You don't need to be a technology expert to get started. The most important thing is having good, accurate learning content to work with.

 

Getting Started

Before you create, ask yourself: "What should someone know or be able to remember after completing this activity?"

Next, gather the information you want learners to practice. Good source material might include:

  • Class or tutoring notes
  • Definitions and important terminology
  • Concepts students need to remember
  • Study guides or review materials
  • Instructor-provided learning materials
  • Word documents, PDFs, or PowerPoint presentations
  • Your own notes from class

Quick Set-Up

Create Your First Learning Activity

  1. Open Learning Activities by logging into Microsoft with your Sierra College email address and password
  2. Select + New Activity and choose the type you want to create
  3. Add Your Learning Content
  4. Choose Your Options (each type above comes with different options)
  5. (Optional) Let AI Generate the Activity
  6. Review and Make Changes
  7. Try It Yourself using the Preview mode
  8. Save and Share via code or link with embedded code

Need Help? Open to using AI?

One of the great things about Learning Activities is that you don't necessarily have to create every question yourself. You can provide your learning content and let AI help transform it into an activity. But there is one VERY important step: Stop and review before you share. AI can make mistakes.

AI-generated content should be treated as a starting point, not automatically as an answer key.

Before sharing an activity:

  • Read every question or card.
  • Verify the answers.
  • Correct inaccurate or misleading information.
  • Remove confusing questions.
  • Make sure terminology matches the course.
  • Check that the activity is appropriate for the students who will use it.

Learning Activities allows generated flashcards to be reviewed, edited, deleted, rearranged, supplemented with additional cards, and previewed before saving.

Watch Out for These Common Pitfalls

  • Too much content: Don't try to turn an entire course into one activity. Focus on a chapter, concept, unit, exam topic, or tutoring session.
  • Poor source material: AI cannot reliably fix inaccurate or incomplete learning content. Start with course materials or other information you trust.
  • Accepting AI answers without checking: Something that sounds confident can still be wrong. Review and verify content before sharing it.
  • Making it unnecessarily difficult: The purpose is to help someone practice, not trick them. Use clear wording and focus on important concepts.
  • Creating without trying: An activity may look good while you're creating it but feel very different to the learner. Preview or practice your activity before sharing it.
