Become a Student Tutor

Take advantage of your academic skill and help other students succeed with a job as a student tutor in mathematics or other college subjects.

Tutors are expected to be able to:

  • Tutor individuals or small groups (2-3) of students
  • Explain class material to students utilizing a variety of learning modalities
  • Be understanding toward struggling students and recognize their needs
  • Provide study techniques and time management skills to students

To qualify, you must:

  • Have an A or B in the subject to be tutored
  • Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units at Sierra College
  • Have a signed instructor recommendation form for each subject
  • Interview with a Learning Center panel
  • Complete or be concurrently enrolled in Skill Development 1: Techniques of Tutoring, a one-unit course designed to provide tutors with the skills they need for effective tutoring. This is the required class for all students who wish to tutor for Sierra College.

Math Tutoring

There are slightly different qualifications to becoming a math tutor.

  • Complete Math 31 with a grade of A or B
  • Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units at Sierra College
  • Maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA each semester
  • Submit an application to the Math Center IA or Coordinator
  • Pass a Live Scan background check
  • Submit an application available at the Math Center

Pay Rates for Math Tutors

Tutors are paid based on knowledge of math and experience with tutoring.

  • Tutors who have completed Math 31 (Calculus 2) begin as Tutor III at $9.00/hr
  • Tutors who have additionally passed Math 13 (Statistics) with an A or B begin as Tutor IV at $9.50/hr
  • Tutors who have take Skill Development 1: Techniques of Tutoring or who have tutored in the Math Center for 2 semesters earn a $0.50 pay increase
